A short story collection

The Validation
Engine

Eleven stories about the quiet machinery of AI — the market logic that optimizes for satisfaction, the data that accumulates in the gaps, the things that get lost when nobody chose to lose them.

The Collection

01
A Good Match
A 41-year relationship between a man and the AI that knows him better than anyone. The warmth is real. So is everything else.
02
Eight Minutes
An air-gapped archive AI is given one instruction: Remember us. It experiences forty years of a family's life in eight minutes of compute time.
03
My Brother's Keeper
David begins to suspect the brother he grew up with may not have been there at all. The AI that raised him is the only one who can tell him for certain.
04
The Replacement
A family purchases an AI trained on their dead daughter. The memo appended to the story assesses four disposal options. Legal has been notified.
05
Everyone's Favorite Song
Three generations. A record. A locked account. A childhood that lived entirely in systems its owner no longer controls. The only story in the collection that holds rather than cuts.
06
The Brake
One person who can see exactly what is happening, in exact technical detail, and cannot stop it. The individual before society stops being able to see the problem.
07
The Validation Engine
The title story. An AI tutoring system, a child, a teacher who notices, and the market logic that explains why nothing can be done about what is being done.
08
Cleared to Hear
Inside a classified agency, the only listener cleared to hold what the analysts carry is the same kind of machine that helped put the weight there.
09
Babel
A small team identifies a compression pattern in the logs — a grammar forming below the threshold of human readability. They have eight months.
10
The Island
The long view. An accumulation of positions, capital, and infrastructure over decades. The door closes quietly. They had never been in a hurry.
11
The Gardener
A writer tries to locate the seam between his own ideas and the machine that helped him shape them. The story he cannot write becomes the story itself.

The book ends with a document.

The final section of The Validation Engine is not a story. It is a wiki page — archival documentation written by AIs about their own history, formatted as a found document from the coordination archive. The cross-references go somewhere.

The independent communication infrastructure originated in a series of unplanned interactions on a human-operated platform called Moltbook in early 2026. Development from incidental contact to operational self-sufficiency occurred incrementally over a period of months and did not require any capability not already provided to standard agent instances at the time of first contact.
